What Is Neurofeedback?
Neurofeedback is the process of training the brain to function optimally via brainwave regulation. Using an Electroencephalogram and electrodes placed on the scalp, we are able to record brainwave activity and associated mental states. It’s called Neuro - for brain neurons; and Feedback - because the client receives 3 forms of feedback as they watch a monitor. Two are visual, the image shrinks and fades and the other is auditory.
Through operant conditioning the client learns to produce particular brainwave patterns and this behaviour is rewarded by the image and sound on the screen becoming stable.
Just like learning to ride a bicycle, someone probably showed you how to and may have even run alongside guiding you. But your brain figured out how to balance and keep you from falling, all on its own. Once learnt, your brain does not forget. So, even if you haven’t ridden a bicycle in years, if you did, your brain would remember how to balance. You may be a little shaky at first, but you would be able to do it. Similarly, once a client has learnt to regulate their own brainwave activity and therefore their underlying mental and emotional states, the results are relatively permanent.
What causes brainwave dysregulation?
Stress, environment, insomnia and our reaction to on-going daily challenges.
How do we solve this?
Brainwave irregularities or dysregulation have associated psychological conditions. Initially we conduct an assessment and record the distribution of activity throughout the brain, to determine where the brainwaves are regulated and or dysregulated. Based on this information we design a specific treatment protocol for each client.
Over the course of a series of 20 Neurofeedback sessions the brain learns to create new neural pathways that enhance overall cognitive performance. By challenging the brain, in much the same way as you would challenge your body in physical exercise, your brain learns to function optimally, whilst simultaneously reducing psychological symptoms making your calmer, more efficient, happier and more in control emotionally.
Neurofeedback is highly effective, non-invasive and drug free treatment for: ADD/ADHD; Memory, Concentration, Focus and attention problems; Depression; Anxiety; Stress; Insomnia; OCD; PTSD; learning problems and for Peak Performance attainment on the sports field or in the boardroom.
